Bucs Win, Improve to 8-12
Behind some excellent pitching by Kip Wells the Pirates beat the Houston Astros 2-0 this afternoon to improve their record to 8-12 and giving them their first series win of the season over an opponent.
Wells allowed just 4 hits over 7 innings of scoreless ball and was relieved by Rick White, who after a rocky start earlier this season, has settled down his past several appearances. Jose Mesa pitched the 9th to record his 300th save, becoming the 19th player and 3rd Latin player to achieve that mark.
Offensively the Pirates continued to strand way too many runners leaving 16 on base and scoring 2 or fewer runs for the 11th time this season. The few bright spots were Jason Bay being 3 for 4 with a RBI and Jack Wilson 2 for 4 with an RBI as well. Hopefully the Pirate's bats will come more alive with men aboard on Friday when the Pirates face the Giants at 7:05 at PNC Park.
